Three Fates

The Three Fates or the Moirae are responsible for determining the course of a mortal's life Children of Zeus and the titan Themis (goddess of justice) . In appearance, they are three women in various stages of life. Clotho or "the Maiden" spins a person's life thread, Lachesis or "the Matron" measures the thread and finally, Atropos or "the Crone" cuts the thread, thus ending the person's life.

The Fates have counter-parts in almost all major mythologies. In Greek, they were known as the Moirae. Their Roman counterparts were called the Parcae. In Norse or Germanic mythology they were called the Norns. Some have also linked them to Shakespeare's Three Witches in "Macbeth." In all cases, they are women and their names generally correspond to their duties. For example, Clotho translates to "spinner," Lachesis to "allotter" and Atropos to "inevitable."
